Every wedding couple would like perfect weather for their special day but unfortunately Mother Nature sometimes has different plans!

You can minimise disappointing weather by having a back up plan just in case it’s raining or too windy for your outdoor wedding. The chances are if you have a back up you won’t need to use it!

Venues usually have indoor or outdoor options which cover all eventualities. However, if you are planning a beach or park wedding then you could look at marquee hire (if permitted) or discussing options with your reception venue if you suddenly have to move locations!

As a photographer I have to work around the weather on a wedding day! So for rainy weddings I will look for interesting features inside, verandas, covered balconies that can provide a background or props such as a funky painting or lamp for your photos.

You will probably hear that most photographers aren’t so keen on blue skies! The Australian Summer light can be very harsh which can cast strong shadows and of course squints! We’ll look for some shade so the light on you is more even as well as using the sun to our advantage. A good idea is for the bridal party to leave their sunnies off for a few days before the wedding so your eyes adjust to bright light.

If it ends up being a 40 degree scorcher then make sure you have plenty of water available and perhaps a decorative parasol but choose one with a lining as if it has holes in the material it’s hard to keep the spot shadows off your face! If rain is possible have plenty of large umbrellas available, there are hire companies around the city who can supply larger numbers.

A perfect light day is a little overcast but bright, however, stormy skies can add some nice drama to a beach or landscape image!

Whatever the weather it will still be your very special day, relax and enjoy!

If the weather looks unsettled have some fun with gumboots and umbrellas! If your photos have to be taken indoors then I’ll look for interesting features such as this staircase.
